Over the Memorial Day weekend I had the pleasure of meeting up with friends, some old and some new. On one occasion we were invited to a barbecue with the family of one of my son’s preschool classmates. We have visited with them briefly at drop-offs and pick-ups and at a few birthday parties over the past couple of years, but this was the first time we had gotten our two families together. My husband and I had a great time getting to know the parents while our children (quite conveniently their two children are the same ages as our two) had a wonderful time running about. We had a great time and I was thankful for the opportunity…it’s always nice to make new friends!
The next day, we spent the late afternoon and evening visiting with two of my best friends from college and their families. Things have changed quite a bit since we all first met more than a decade ago…most notably, the fact that there are children in the picture, of course! It was great to see, though, that while some things change, some stay the same, like our ability to laugh and have fun together and instantly reconnect though time and miles separate us more than we’d like.
I ended the weekend feeling like my cup had runneth over. Having good friends in your life and making new friends is so refreshing for the soul. And healthy for you, too! According to a new study from Brigham Young University, “a strong social network, especially one with healthy pals, improves your chance of living longer by 50%! It doubles your odds of surviving cancer and wards off colds. Friends may even reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, says lead study author Julianne Holt-Lunstad, PhD. And not having close bonds can be as bad for you as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.” Click here to read the article from Prevention Magazine about the study. There’s also a quiz to help you determine “How healthy are your friendships?”
I’m fortunate to have many good friends in my life and to know that there are still many more that I have yet to meet! How about you? What has having good friends done for your life and your health? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments below!
